Social Change

My aim for this project was to create awareness of the large male suicide issue in New Zealand. The annual male suicide rate is more than twice that of their woman counterparts. There is huge issue in New Zealand’s society regarding the ‘kiwi bloke’ stereotype. Stigmas such as real men don’t cry, and men are meant to be ‘masculine’ are some of the reasons we see such awful suicide numbers. Men don’t reach out for help or are shunned when they do. I wanted my work to provoke meaningful change surrounding this issue. My work breaks down some of the stereotypical conventions that New Zealand men conform to causing the large rate of depression. Using visual rhetoric I challenge the viewer on these stereotypes.
